Considerations: Can be teratogenic (cause birth defects) in pregnant animals, especially in the first trimester. Therefore, it's generally not recommended for use in pregnant animals or during outbreaks where susceptible pregnant animals are present. It requires strict cold chain management.
Usage: Ideal for routine, prophylactic vaccination in endemic areas before expected outbreaks and breeding seasons, in non-pregnant animals.
2. Inactivated Vaccine: This vaccine uses a killed version of the RVF virus, often combined with an adjuvant.
Benefits: Safe for use in pregnant animals and during an outbreak, as it carries no risk of causing the disease or teratogenicity.
Considerations: Typically requires multiple doses (a primary vaccination followed by booster shots) to induce and maintain sufficient protective immunity. Production can be more labor-intensive and have a longer lead time.
Usage: Recommended for vaccinating pregnant animals and for emergency vaccination during outbreaks. Annual revaccination is essential to maintain protection.
Both vaccine types require proper storage (typically 2-8°C, never frozen for inactivated vaccines) and administration (subcutaneously).
