Halocur

Halocur is a specialized oral solution for newborn calves, containing Halofuginone base (0.5 mg/ml as lactate salt). It is a vital tool for combating Cryptosporidium parvum, a highly contagious protozoan parasite that causes severe diarrhea (scours) in young calves.

Halocur is used for two main purposes:

Prevention of diarrhea: On farms with a history of cryptosporidiosis, administration should start within the first 24 to 48 hours of age to prevent the onset of disease.

Reduction of diarrhea: Treatment should begin within 24 hours of the onset of diarrhea to lessen its severity and reduce the shedding of infectious oocysts into the environment, thereby limiting spread.

Halocur works by having a cryptosporidiostatic effect, primarily acting on the free stages of the parasite. It's administered orally once a day for 7 consecutive days, always after feeding (milk or milk replacer). Strict adherence to dosage and treatment time is crucial for efficacy and to prevent toxicity.
