Bovela

Bovela is a live, attenuated vaccine for cattle developed by Boehringer Ingelheim, specifically designed to protect against Bovine Viral Diarrhoea Virus (BVDV). It is unique as a single-dose vaccine (followed by annual boosters) that provides immunity against both BVDV Type 1 and Type 2.

The primary goals of Bovela vaccination are:

Preventing the birth of Persistently Infected (PI) calves: This is crucial, as PI calves constantly shed the virus and are a major source of BVDV spread within herds. Bovela aims to prevent transplacental infection when given at least three weeks before breeding.

Reducing clinical signs: It helps to lessen fever and minimize the reduction in white blood cell count caused by BVDV infection.

Reducing virus shedding and viraemia: This limits the spread of the virus within and between herds.

Bovela is administered as a 2 mL intramuscular injection to cattle from 3 months of age. A significant benefit is its zero-day withdrawal period for meat and milk, meaning there's no waiting time before products from vaccinated animals can be consumed. It is generally considered safe for use in pregnant cattle, though some temporary viral shedding can occur.
