The African Horse Sickness (AHS) vaccine in South Africa is a live, multi-strain vaccine (polyvalent) given in two injections, typically 3-4 weeks apart.

It works by giving horses a mild, controlled exposure to the virus, building their immunity. Vaccination is compulsory annually for most horses in South Africa, specifically recommended between June and October (lower midge season) to reduce risks. While effective, it's a live vaccine so minor reactions or, rarely, spread by midges can occur.
