Glycerine acts as a base, but it also helps by drawing out wound fluid (reducing swelling and promoting drainage) and keeping the skin around the wound moisturized. This makes it ideal for cleaning and treating infected or weeping wounds, as well as minor cuts and abrasions. It's safe for both people and animals.
